Which cooker should you choose?

Discover the different types of cookers and find the model that suits you.

Gas cooker

Cooking on gas is the traditional way to cook. A gas cooker has a gas hob and usually an electric oven. An advantage of a gas hob is that you can control the temperature very precisely and quickly. As soon as you turn the gas down, you can see it from the flame height and the temperature drops. A disadvantage of gas cookers is that the hob isn’t always easy to clean. In addition, cooking with gas can be dangerous because you’re working with an open flame. Fortunately, every gas cooker nowadays has flame failure safety: the gas supply stops when the flame goes out. Cooking on gas consumes oxygen, so good ventilation is important. Gas cookers come in all kinds of styles, sizes and price ranges. Choose a design model or go for one of the entry-level options.

Pros and cons of a gas cooker:

+ Temperature is easy to control.
+ Available in all shapes and sizes.
+ Relatively efficient in use.
+ Entry-level models are relatively inexpensive.
+ Premium models have a stylish, timeless design.
- Open flame can be dangerous for children and pets.
- Ventilation during cooking is necessary.
- Hob can be difficult to clean.

Induction cooker

A kitchen with white cabinets and a gray countertop features cooking utensils, a pot, a kettle, and a stainless steel oven.

The hob of an induction cooker heats pans using a magnetic field. As a result, the base of the pan is heated, and the hob itself doesn’t get hot. Thanks to the smooth surface, you can easily clean an induction hob with a cloth and some cleaner. Induction cookers always have an electric oven. An induction cooker is more expensive to buy than a gas cooker, but it’s more energy-efficient in use. That’s because the cooking zone heats the pan directly and hardly any heat is lost, as is the case with gas. Moreover, the hob only gets hot when there’s a pan on it, which is safer. Many induction cookers come with handy features such as a timer, child lock and a boost function for extra-fast heating.

Pros and cons of an induction cooker:

+ Easy to clean.
+ Safe to use.
+ Energy-efficient in use.
+ Often equipped with handy options such as boost function, timer and child lock.
- Special pans required.
- Temperature is less instantly adjustable.

Ceramic cooker

A ceramic cooker has an electric oven and a ceramic hob. Like induction hobs, ceramic hobs are easy to clean thanks to the smooth surface. Downsides are that more energy is lost during cooking and the temperature is less precisely controllable than with gas.

Pros and cons of a ceramic cooker:

+ Easy to clean.
+ No special pans required.
- More energy loss during cooking than with induction.
- Temperature less precisely controllable.

Electric cooker with solid hotplates

A traditional electric cooker has metal hotplates and an electric oven. The big advantage is the low price. Downsides are greater energy loss during cooking, poorer temperature control, and hotplates that heat up and cool down slowly.

Pros and cons of a traditional electric cooker:

+ Relatively low price.
+ Easy to clean.
+ No special pans required.
- Loses more energy than other types of cookers.
- Temperature isn’t precisely controllable.
- Hotplates heat up and cool down slowly.

What should you look out for in a cooker?

90 cm wide cooker

Many people look for a 90 cm wide cooker. It’s suitable for new and existing kitchens, and there’s a wide range available. Cookers of this size often have 5, sometimes 6, cooking zones. These wider models are popular because the 5th burner can be a special wok burner or a simmer burner.

Note: the cooker hood above the hob must be at least as wide. In this case a minimum of 90 cm.

60 cm wide cooker

A 60 cm cooker fits in many existing and new kitchens. A 60 cm cooker often has 4 gas burners or 4 electric cooking zones. This popular model is available in many types from all brands, making it possible to find a 60 cm entry-level model at a relatively low price.

Note: the cooker hood above the hob must be at least as wide. In this case a minimum of 60 cm.

Cookers 120, 110, 100, 80, 70 and 50 cm wide

Narrow and wide cookers are available so there’s a suitable model for every kitchen. Each size has its own pros and cons. Models 50 and 70-cm wide have 4 gas burners, or 4 cooking zones for electric. 80-cm cookers aren’t easy to find, but they do exist. Appliances 100, 110 and 120-cm wide have 5 to 8 gas burners. When an induction or ceramic hob is this width, there are often 5 to a maximum of 6 zones. The wider cookers are usually equipped with special wok burners and simmer burners to help you prepare your favourite dishes even better. Tip: No space for a wide cooker but want to use large pans? Choose an induction or ceramic model with flexible zones, so 2 zones can be combined into one larger cooking area.

Cleaning a cooker

Some cookers are easier to clean than others. Hobs with a glass surface are the easiest to clean. It’s important to remove baked-on food with a cleaner before it burns in. A downside of glass is that grease marks show easily. The oven also needs regular maintenance. Premium ovens have an easy-to-clean enamel coating. This keeps the walls smooth so you can wipe them clean with a cloth and soap. There are cleaning sets made specifically for cleaning induction, ceramic or stainless-steel hobs and ovens.

Cooker with oven

Most cookers have an electric oven. Decide what’s important to you: a fan oven, a combi oven, or a double oven. Ease of use can also be a consideration.

Cooker with fan oven

A fan oven distributes heat in the oven by blowing hot air in through openings at the back. The advantage of a cooker with a fan oven is that you can bake well on multiple levels.

Cooker with combi oven

This type of cooker has an oven that combines fan heat, grill and top-and-bottom heat. All these functions can be used in various combinations. For example, you can cook chicken quickly by combining fan heat with the grill function.

Cooker with double oven

A cooker with 2 ovens exudes pure luxury. For cooking enthusiasts, multiple ovens are ideal for preparing several dishes at the same time. The Belling brand offers 60 cm wide cookers with 2 ovens. In the 90 cm variants you sometimes even see 3 ovens. The different ovens often also have a specific mode, for example one fan oven and another for top-and-bottom heat. There are even cookers with an extra grill oven. Ideal for cooking meat, chicken and fish, and for gratinating dishes.

Ease of use for cooker ovens

Do you love baking, and do it often? Then extra features such as automatic baking programmes, timer settings, cool door and telescopic runners are for you. A cool door means the door remains relatively cool on the outside, so no one gets burned. Telescopic runners are a sliding system that lets you pull the baking tray out fully horizontally before lifting it. This way the tray doesn’t tip, and biscuits stay in place.
